I Love It When You Help!

One day after I posted this photo and my concerns about the nude model being Sharon Tate, Harold G. emailed me some great information:

This is a Sam Haskins photograph and was used on the cover of the catalog for the “Four Masters of Erotic Photography” exhibition in Europe back in 1970. It seems to be called “Apple Dance”.

Harold included this link, which shows that the photograph was used as the cover of the catalog for a 1970 an exhibition which began in Munich (hence the German), and later traveled around Europe. (Translated, the show was entitled Four Masters of Erotic Photography.)

Upon confirming with Harold that I could share his comment, he agreed and said:

… I would have made it a comment myself if I had actually found more definitive information about the model (and I do think it is one of Haskins’ models, not a celebrity.)

I concur.

Especially with regards to Tate herself.

Sharon Tate passed on August 9, 1969; I’m pretty sure any nude photographs of her, especially those being so exhibited, would have been heavily publicized.

But (hint-hint, nudge-nudge) we still don’t know who the model was… Anyone else?

UPDATE: Several hours later…

Once I published this post I contacted Ludwig Haskins, the son of photographer Sam Haskins (who also runs the photographer’s official blog and website), and asked him if he knew anything about the model. I am grateful for his reply:

The image was taken in 1969 in Sam’s Chelsea studio in London, shortly after he moved from Johannesburg. The model’s name was Kate but I cannot remember her surname.

The image was first exhibited at Photokina in 1970 and then went on tour in Europe as part of The Four Master of Erotic Photography exhibition. The other three photographers were David Hamilton, Francis Giacobetti and Kishin Shinoyama.

Here’s a photo of Ludwig’s father and mother, Alida and Sam, at the Chelsea studio in London. This photo by Petr Tausk was taken in 1976, and the image is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
