Here's what it looks like to me ...
It's "A Sockl, Wien, I" ...that's the letter "I", as in the German " illustriert" ... i.e., "illustrated". That would make "A Sockl" an illustrator in Vienna. The postcard itself is #713 from the "Vlan" collection.
But then I've only had one pot of tea and am just waking up ...:-)
A. Sockl is the Name of the Pubisher.
and Wien, I (roman numeral one) means Vienna, first District.
about the vlan i have no idea.
The disgruntled man is wearing the horns of the cuckold, a common signifier at that time of a man whose wife engages in adultery. Maybe the woman is his wife?
Thanks for the info; now I covet such a card ;)
Knowing it's from Vienna will help. And John, I did not know that about horns!
The horns of cuckoldry seems to be one of those very old symbols which has become lost in the 20th century. Interesting to ponder why since it goes back a long way, to medieval times at least. Wikipedia tells me that the symbolism shows the man "wearing horns that can be seen by everybody but him."
It's been in my mind recently because I've been re-reading Joyce's Ulysses in which the character of Leopold Bloom is being cheated on by his wife. Joyce makes much of this and litters the text with references to horns, cuckoos and so on.
