Modern Vs. Vintage Porn: Is The Problem The Director's Cut?
The details of what the viewer could do, would do if given the chance, was all inside their own heads; viewers were therefore their own directors. But with porn and video the action was no longer inside our own heads, others directed it. All we had to do was add lube and work our hands.I'd love to hear what you have to say, so if you promise to go read it & comment, I promise to post more images later today...
Sometimes I am convinced that what most people are complaining about when they say they hate porn, even wanting to restrict it further, is not that they are against publications or films which are solely for sexual arousal and release but rather that they are unmoved by it. Porn has in many cases removed the imagination of the viewer, directed us not as we desire, but forced us to see things which remove the mystery. We no longer have time to be seduced by the people before us before we are tossed into the action; graphic images of genitalia spread across our screens before we've even decided we'd take him or her home.

When I first started writing porn I had two major influences. One was the Forum Letters in Penthouse because even if they were not really true stories, they had the illusion of being real confessions. The other influence was soft core movies, especially the comedies. I started writing with those two models in mind. It took me awhile to understand that what I really liked about both styles was that I liked the people involved. It wasn't the sex as much as it was about liking the people and now these people I liked were getting lucky.
I find that porn is often a youth driven thing. Young people are desperate for knowledge and they are happy to get a chance to see a nipple without context because by golly, they weren't sure what a nipple looked like. There was a weird moment when I was in my mid-20's that I realized Playboy was aiming at an audience younger than me. I think the way most businesses crave that young 20's market as the ideal disposable income target has really warped mainstream porn into a perpetual adolescence.
I am encouraged by how many adult blogs I see written by the over-30 crowd. They are generating their own non-puberty porn and it's been a gold mine of material.
According to Linda Williams' "Hard Core" the whole point of hard core pornography is to show "real sex", that the physiological act of intercourse has occurred on screen. To make that visible to the viewer, porn uses various tactics like the closeup penetration and the external ejaculation on the face or body, which ironically are not terribly "realistic".
Thus, the amount of imagination required of the viewer by hardcore porn is minimized, along with the interactivity. This puts the hardcore in the same category as melodrama, where nothing is hidden or implied. The Romantic playwrights hated the bloody, supernatural excesses of the early 19th century stage, and made a point of moving the violence offstage.
